The Babbage’s hung out their shingle in 1984, bringing together the three brothers, their Mother, Father and a small group of quality tradesman as a general building contracting company, named after their parents Brian ‘B’ and ‘M’ Mary, not very imaginative but tapping into a well established name well known within the Cotswolds more importantly than their home town of Cheltenham.
In those days the slogan was ‘for all your building needs’ domestic, commercial, shops, civil engineering, in fact any construction work where the opportunity presented itself. The strength within the business in those early days used the ‘family’ members strung out across the workforce with representatives from the site based operations to the supporting function within the office. The business demand forced a dilution of the family element with a greater polarisation on individual skills but without losing the family business feel.
The client base grew steadily moving with the market conditions, in the late eighties the construction market was strong in housing and we moved into this sector providing a house building service for individuals, development companies and architect led projects. Commercial, Council and School projects followed giving the business a wide background and providing valuable experience. Masterbuilder of the year Commendations and Awards as well as Civic Society Awards recognised quality workmanship and landmark projects. Fun things like the Carol Vorderman’s ‘Better Homes’ where we carried out the full construction support on two projects to high profile clients such as the Chief Executive of the Premier League pepped up the business and allowed us to promote ourselves outside of the run of the mill workload.
The contracting works based on tendering also continued to provide a fertile business stream and in those days we started dealing with the insurance market, this area of work became a regular source of tender opportunities and has lead to a growth in this side of our activities. In addition to the tender acquired works we have developed various relationships for series of projects here with the ethos of partnering and a real appreciation of collaborative working has been maintained and one we whole heartily agree with.
In 2006, we extended our office arrangements with the acquisition of our Walsall office here a new team has been developed following the thinking of the Cheltenham office but forming its own identity. This office together with Cheltenham enables us to handle works across the West Midlands and give the sort of service modern clients and construction professionals seek these days.
The continued growth of the business with the priority on service, training and quality remain our goals without losing our traditional roots and family connections.
The construction industry is a fine business and one we are proud to be associated with.
